Gansbaai came into being in the early 1880’s as a result of the great fishing opportunities it presented. It got its name from the freshwater fountain in the harbour which was frequented by the “kolgans” thus Gansbaai or Bay of Geese. Gansbaai is the name for the area which encompasses the towns of De Kelders, Perlemoenbaai, Franskraal, Klipfonteyn, Kleinbaai, Blompark, Masakhane, Pearly Beach and Baardskeerdersbos. This is an area ruled by the ocean and blessed with floral abundance. Towering over Walker Bay, the cliffs of De Kelders are known for the world’s best land-based whale watching.
