Heidelberg Property - Real Estate

Flanked by major rivers, Heidelberg is conveniently located between the majestic Langeberg mountains and the sea. This beautiful country town, on the banks of the Duivenhoks River, is next to the N2 highway, 276 km from Cape Town and 168 km from George. In 1689 an explorer, Izaak Schryver, camped here and found so many doves that he gave the river its rather unusual name. The town was named after Heidelberg in Germany, the source of the Heidelberg Catechism and like the new Heidelberg, built on the banks of a river. It is a small, tranquil town with friendly people, good schools and a modern infrastructure. Here you can enjoy quality country town living in a quaint village.

Known as the "Gateway to the Garden Route", the town, with its population of 6415, offers shopping facilities, including food stores, a pharmacy, furniture stores, gift shops, coffee shops, restaurants, take-away cafes, bottle stores, garages, and a well equipped "Co-op" that supports the farming community. Besides the clinic, you can find doctors, a physiotherapist and a vet. A dentist and optometrist are available certain days of the week in town. Other times they're available in the neighboring towns of Riversdale and Swellendam, these two towns also offer hospital and other medical facilities.

The town is a treasure of beautiful old buildings of historical heritage, including a church with Gothic architecture.
The mountains are full of some of the most pristine fynbos you can find in the Western Cape.

The indigenous forest at Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve is most noteworthy and the largest remaining example in the Langeberg. Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve is home to an unspoiled wilderness and 250ha of indigenous forest. It's the only place in the world where certain species of Ghost frog and Forest Emperor butterfly can be found. It also hosts fynbos, animals, bird watching and our Xairu Blue Crane Route is a must for every nature lover. Both the Tradouws and Gysmanshoek Passes offer the tourist unbelievable natural scenery and some of the most beautiful fynbos in season.

Boosmansbos Wilderness Area, between Swellendam and Heidelberg in the Langeberg Mountain Range, is a large, rugged forest reserve that is not very well-known to the general public. It offers 196 bird species, cycling routes, hikes and a lovely mountain pool. It is an excellent place for hikers to clamber up peaks with far-reaching views, explore one of the larger remaining indigenous Cape forest patches in the fynbos ecological zone, and enjoy the many flowering species which blanket the mountain slopes. The 70km trail of footpaths and gravel roads offers overnight huts which are simple shelters with no facilities, except for water from a nearby stream. Alternatively, hikers may sleep in the open.
