Newlands Property - Real Estate

At the foot of Table Mountain, lies the well-known suburb of Cape Town, Newlands. Newlands property is typified by the mature gardens and sylvan glades of English Oaks and Plane trees; this beautiful suburb in the upper markets of the Southern Suburbs is a world of its own. Boasting the highest rainfall in South Africa, residents and gardens bloom with good health - verdant gardens where agents often warn that even a broom handle will grow if a buyer plants one, and that the climate is especially good for their buyer’s complexions!

Of course, the dominant feature is the mountain, which for so many properties in Newlands is framed in their views from their windows. Newlands Forest and the mountain trails are a popular place over weekends and holidays, the trails being well-managed and sign-posted for newcomers to enjoy. For the energetic hikers, what better way to end a summer’s evening than to climb down Skeleton Gorge to Kirstenbosch Gardens and enjoy an open-air evening concert on the lawns!
Kirstenbosch Gardens offers so many diverse and interesting places, including tea gardens, a Bio-diversity Centre, an excellent restaurant, cafes, curio shops and easy rambles for the most sedate patrons. Carols by Candlelight is an event held every Christmas at the Gardens, and patronised by most residents and tourists as a ‘not to be missed’ evening of the year.

Sports fans and sportsmen alike will know Newlands as the home of the local rugby and cricket teams. Newlands Rugby and Cricket Stadiums are centre-stage for test and local games, and for many, an opportunity to spend an exhilarating afternoon watching a Curry Cup game or Test. Afterwards, a relaxing walk back up the mountain to that well-known pub, Foresters Arms, lets you unwind, share a pint with friends, analyse the game or simply enjoy the company and camaraderie of fellow spectators!

Another gem for the sports fans is Josephine’s Mill which is located next to the Newlands Rugby Stadium; it is the only surviving reminder of the old brewery, The Ohlsson’s. The mill is now a historic monument, and was the water wheel that ground the grain for the brewery. The original site of the brewery is now SACS school, possibly one of the most well-known schools in Cape Town.

Studded with leading schools such as SACS and Westerford High, Newlands real estate in South Africa is a sought-after destination for many property buyers with families of school-going ages, as the surrounding suburbs also offer diverse colleges, schools, and the University of Cape Town being only a short walk away. Upmarket Cavendish Square Shopping Centre and fashion boutiques are also an easy stroll away, in addition to the trendy cafes and restaurants that populate the suburb.

Newlands properties are characterised by a diverse range of options, offering at the one end of the spectrum charming and quaint cottages in the ever-popular Newlands Village, to larger, family-sized homes in Hiddingh Estate and the grander, more extensive Newlands properties in beautiful Fernwood Estate. The Liesbeeck River is a feature that runs through this special suburb, which has its own fan club, the Friends of the Liesbeeck, protecting the river from environmental damage and pollution. Often offering rambles along the river, these enthusiasts perform a vital service to homeowners in the area as well as visitors.

During the heavy winter rains, the mountain shows a different face to Newlands residents, as she appears as though she is weeping, as countless waterfalls and rivulets stream down the Newlands’ face of the mountain – perhaps a reminder to those fortunate enough to live in this splendid zone that these resources are limited, they must be guarded and protected. For who could imagine Cape Town without this verdant treasure, nestling in the lee of our magical mountain!
