A schedule of finishes, down to the last detail, must be put into a formal contract, completed, agreed to and signed by yourself and the builder. Bear in mind that any changes made at a later stage could significantly alter the original cost.

Equally important is the necessity for the builder to state in writing whether the contract price is subject to escalation. If so, the rate of escalation to be applied must be clearly stated in the tender.
