White River property in South Africa presents many opportunities for the discerning buyer. The town lies approximately 20km north of the Nelspruit property area, the provincial capital of Mpumalanga. It has become a popular stopover as well as a destination from where the many attractions of this magnificent province are but a leisurely drive away. This property in Mpumalanga is culturally mixed with Afrikaans and English speaking residents as well as a small percentage of African and Indian families sharing the town. The international airport (Kruger Mpumalanga International) is 12km from White River and a mere 28km from the Kruger National Park. Airlink Airlines have daily return flights from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban to Kruger Mpumalanga International. There are also regular flights to and from Maputo.


The charm and tranquillity of White River has induced many of the country’s foremost potters, painters, sculptors and furniture makers to settle in the area. The town is situated on the Mamzimhlope (White Waters) river, a tributary of the Crocodile River. The name of White River derives from this river due to the kaolin contents found in the river that give it a white tinge.


The town was established in 1904 for unemployed British soldiers returning from war.  Smallholdings of 40ha were offered on easy terms. The holdings were originally too small to be economically viable, until a syndicate purchased the area in 1914. Citrus trees were planted, and soon the area had developed a viable agricultural industry. Today, White River is the centre of a well-developed industry where vegetables, subtropical fruit, flowers, nuts and timber are produced.


There is a top calibre independent, co-educational school within a few minutes of White River and situated near to some of the best real estate in South Africa. Uplands Preparatory and Uplands College is situated on park-like grounds and surrounded by forests. The school is within walking/cycling distance from both White River Country Estate and Lake View.  Uplands is the reason for many people settling in White River real estate. Husbands run businesses in Mozambique or Gauteng, while wives stay here with children.


Nine kilometres on the R40 to Nelspruit is Penryn College, linked to the Methodist Church and twinned with St. Stithians College in Johannesburg. Penryn College is situated on the Boschrand hills, overlooking the Crocodile Valley and Nelspruit. Both Penryn and Uplands schools consist of pre-primary, preparatory and college. There are also the White River Primary and Rob Ferreira High schools as well as a number of small private schools in and round the town.


In regards to accommodation options, White River has a selection of four-star hotels, lodges, conference facilities, time share resorts and bed and breakfast amenities. When it comes to dining out, White River caters for all tastes from pub luncheons to haute cuisine. Restaurants such as Salt and Oliver’s share top billing with many other excellent venues available.


White River Square has a full compliment of shopping facilities as well as the Village Mall with its Super Spar. The Riverside Mall (which is conveniently situated between Nelspruit and White River) caters for all your requirements. Casterbridge Farm is one of the most original and charming shopping concepts in South Africa, boasting a blend of Victorian and Tuscan architecture complimented by magnificently kept gardens. A selection of clothing, linen, furniture and décor shops, as well as restaurants and coffee shops offer exceptional quality and style. Lowveld Tourism is conveniently situated in the centre. There is also a cinema, which has a regular line-up of art-circuit movies.


There is an endless selection of activities available within the White River town and surrounds. Anything from white water rafting, abseiling, diving, game drives, micro lighting and hot air ballooning can be found. Golfing is a very popular activity and there are three top 18-holes golf courses in the vicinity.  Other sports activities such as bowls, rugby, tennis, squash, cricket, hockey and running are also available. There are also a number of service organisations such as Round Table, Moths and Rotary. Well-known South Africans and a former internationally known Zimbabwean tennis player live in White River property and work in Gauteng or elsewhere in South Africa and overseas.


In town there are very few properties available under R950, 000, while the average property price is between R1.2m and R2m. On the upmarket lifestyle estate market in White River, property sells from R2.5m to R10m. Residential land ranges from R450, 000 to R1m+ for stands on lifestyle estates.
